Ophelia Fernando

Second Year Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Medical Biotechnology) at Deakin University
I am a student committed to serve the community who has gained a diverse range of leadership experiences from roles within my local, greater, and Deakin University communities.
From 2019 I first started pursuing opportunities that would not only develop my leadership skillset but allow me to positively impact my colleagues, fellow volunteers, and peers. Over the years I have grown to understand that leadership is an unpredictable journey that involves pursuing opportunities as they arise, applying constructive criticism, sharing feedback, reflecting on your own actions, and getting comfortable with being uncomfortable stepping outside your comfort zone. By doing this it results in positively influencing people around you, contributing to the development of your peers, improving your ability to lead teams, better positioning yourself in preparation for the workforce, and utilising sound judgement in familiar and unfamiliar situations. Most importantly, my leadership journey has been a great opportunity to improve self-awareness about professional environments, understand the variety of values people have, and utilise unique ways to communicate effectively whilst achieving goals.
My leadership timeline is broken down by organisations I have been involved with and further details concerning all listed positions can be found under their relevant menu titles containing supporting evidence and testimonials.
Thank you for making the time to consider my application for the Excellence in Leadership Deakin University Hallmark Award.
